How To Be by Oliver Irving

How To Be by Oliver Irving

Slamdance — Finished just two days before it’s world premiere, Oliver Irving’s first feature How To Be tells the humorous story of a directionless young man who turns to a self-help guru in hopes of becoming more “normal”.

Art has been feeling down lately. In fact he’s always unhappy… and he can’t seem to figure out why. As a budding musician, Art’s plays songs for the mentally challenged, and his audience is not that receptive to his solemn ballads. After losing his job and being kicked out by his girlfriend, Art’s forced to move back home with his parents. But this situation just seems to make things worse. Convinced that he’s having a quarter-life crisis and with no support from his indifferent parents, Art finds comfort in a promising self-help book by Dr. Levi Ellington entitled It’s Not Your Fault. Armed with a newfound determination to make his life better, Art spends his Grandfather’s inheritance on a classic Camaro and some one-on-one counseling from Dr. Ellington himself. Together they analyze Art’s past and family relationships to determine the cause of his ill fate. But Art soon discovers that he’s got a lot of work to do.

How To Be delivers enjoyable performances, especially from Robert Pattinson, Johnny White and Mike Pearce, which are highlighted with interesting camera work (by Paul Swan), an eclectic soundtrack and nice attention to set design. After just making their world premiere at Slamdance, we expect you’ll hear more about this one on the circuit this year.
